Question of the Week

Question: "To whom it may concern, I don't know if you can help me. No one else has, but I have a question for you. I went to China this summer and looking back was severely malnourished. That is, I ate a lot of rice and not a lot else. Now, I get these really bad headaches unless I eat red meat or bacon at just about every meal. Also, I think sugar might cause me to get headaches. I thought I might have hypoglycemia because unless I spread out my meals like 6 small ones a day, I have no energy. All of my tests have been normal like blood sugar, protein level, endocrine tests. etc. If you have any knowledge that could help me, I would owe you my sanity. Thanks so much for your time. Sincerely, Ashley"
Answer Dear Ashley, Thank you for contacting Health Pro PLus. From your description it sounds like you have a good handle on what may be reactive hypogylcemia. It is not a disease, it is a condition that can develop for unknown reasons that can make you feel miserable as you have experienced. The meat and/or bacon at each meal is giving you protein and fat, both of which help keep blood sugar stable. Healthier sources of these protein are fish, egg whites, poultry and legumes. Keep your meat lean. healthier sources of fat than bacon are avocado, almonds, walnuts and a little olive oil. I would avoid refined sugars and flours and if you do eat them , pair them with some protein and a healthier type of fat. Also, continue to eat frequent small meals throughout the day. Ashley, on-line consultations are limited and an in-person visit with a health professional like myself would be optimal, this does not replace that. If you are in the Chicagoland area and have any additional questions or concerns, my office is in Skokie. And, please feel free to write-in and let me know how you are doing. Thank you again.

Sincerely,
JoEllen Kaufman, MS, LDN
